Sarah has over 10 year’s extensive child minding experience and she is also a mum herself to two daughters.
Sarah’s motivation has been, "What’s the point of having all this knowledge if you can’t pass it on to someone less experienced who needs the support?"
That’s where Home-Start came in. Sarah responded to an advert she saw at a childminding course to join our 10 week preparation course for volunteers. Sarah was soon visiting her first family who had three children under four. After she finished supporting this first family Nikki, our Senior Co-ordinator, matched Sarah with Tammy and Anika as she felt her experience and energy would be perfectly matched to the family’s needs. She was right! |
N ot only could Sarah help Tammy with practical issues like shopping and de-cluttering the home, but she also developed a relationship with Anika and shared play ideas and skills with Tammy. Sarah said "Tammy’s self-esteem has been able to grow because I have never judged Tammy and this has meant a lot to her".
The volunteer work that Sarah does makes her reflect on her own life and she tries never to take little things for granted. She is so happy that Tammy and Anika are going from strength to strength and that she can share her skills and experience with families in need of support, through Home-Start. |
